XII. Worldly Concerns

NOTE: Upon completion of Peace and Harmony in Daily Living, by Ramesh Balsekar, the following summary of Advaita arose.

Advaita

  1. With Enlightenment/spiritual search, why concern oneself?
Comfortable, at all times, with yourself, others and your Creator?
What most in life want you?
Peace and harmony in the face of all events -
to live, day-to-day, without mental stress and tension?

  2. In From Onions to Pearls, Satyam Nadeen:
there is no free will, no "doer" of actions,
        no "me", no personal responsibility.
How can this be? To accept, difficult.
At times: I don't know anything anymore!
Yet, I know I don't know anything anymore
        whence arises this knowledge?
Thus, Buddha: "Events happen, deeds are done, but
there is no individual doer thereof."
    Advaita exists1

  3. Buddha on Enlightenment: the end of all seeking
        us to end suffering.
The polaric opposite of pain/pleasure of the
        moment, to remove, impossible
So the expected (pleasure/pain) is to be accepted.
What blocks achieving the shanti (peace of nirvana),
        the absence of dubbha (suffering)?

  4. It is thought arising from memory
which is absolutely not in anyone's control.
(Test this statement in your witnessing meditation.)
A thought of guilt/shame for something
one did or did not do; or,
A thought of hatred/malace for what
the "other" did or did not do.
Thus, volition or the sense of personal doership -
whether in "me" or the "other", shatters
        the peace/harmony experience,
Allowing suffering to arise once again.

  5. Consciousness is the Dreamer, and, we, the dreamt.
The object is the Subject; the perceived, the perceiver.
"Thou art the Doer and Thou art the Experience."
Upon awakening: only the impersonal Awareness
        of Being: I AM.
(The only thing a human being knows is that he/she exists.)
Sudden realization happens2: personal "doership" fades away -
any action is only a divine happening.
(Are you in control of the consequences of your supposed "freewill"?
Or, do you believe in freewill and unconscious conditioned mind pattern?)

  6. Yet, live your life AS IF you are the doer.
Do whatever you are LED to do in the present moment
to provide for the future, then
let the future take care of itself.
Nothing can happen unless it is the will of Consciousness.
Live as if you are "being lived".
"All one can do is to do what one wants
        and then accept WHAT-IS.

  7. The cause of unhappiness is non-acceptance of WHAT-IS.
Non-acceptance of WHAT-IS, is an outcome of the
        concept of what should be.
With the flow of life, go: more pleasure/less pain.
    Yield in order to overcome.
Non-action in which there is no ego involvement3.
The thinking mind, no; the working mind, yes4.
Thus, the total acceptance of no "me", no "doer"
results in the total acceptance of WHAT-IS
        as God's will.

  8. Throughout life, as a separate entity I identify
yet surrending my sense of personal doership.
At life's end, fear of the loss of my individuality?
To give up the fictitious self and be the whole Unicity -
        individuality emerging into totality?
If truly no entity as such at all,
        Death5, where is thy sting!

  9. Know that the Supreme Reality alone exists, and
this transcendent knowing is itself that Reality.
The Ultimate Understanding is that there is no one
        to understand anything.
True Ultimate Understanding: impersonal, noumenal -
we can only BE the understanding.

  10. Yet, exists doubt?
A fact: no individual doer in any deed?
To answer: Test this "non-doership" concept
in the fire of your own experience.
Find out who is the doer.

  11. Consciousness is all there is.

Footnotes:

  1. Basic Concept of Advaita: "The principle is that every human being is a separate uniquely programmed instrument, through which the same Primal Energy functions and bring about whatever is supposed to happen through each human instrument, in the moment, according to a conceptual Cosmic Law which it is impossible for mortal man ever to know. This is the way 'separation' both exists and does not exist in our day-to-day knowing." "The individual human being is essentially a mere phenomenal appearance that is 'being lived' in this dream manifestation. I am a dreamed character and I play the part or role assigned to me." "The nothingness of the phenomenal Void is really the fullness of the phenomenal Potential Plenum."
  2. "The arising of any thought in anyone is absolutely not in one's control. An intellectual acceptance of non-doership which is total and unconditionally complete cannot be achieved, only given." " A particular individual's thought will turn towards God and Reality only when the totality feels the need of that happening." "Divine Presence alone generates the yearning of our heart, the seeking of our mind, the ease of our body, the illumination of our soul." In other words, we wake up only if Consciousness wants us to wake up!
  3. "The seeking of freedom from so-called human bondage is based on a complete misconception. The misconception lies in the fact that the ego misconceives as his own reaction what is essentially a natural biological reaction in the human sensory system. This (natural) reaction is strictly according to the programming in the body -mind instrument over which he has had no control (i.e., genes, and the unique DNA, plus the up-to-date conditioning). Therefore, if this natural reaction is accepted as such, there is no involvement. The involvement that takes you out of the natural state happens only when you identify yourself with the reaction: I am angry, or I am afraid and I don't like it.
Unless this personal involvement happens, the mere natural arising of the reaction does not take you out of the natural state." Thus, total liberation is the Ultimate Understanding that there is no individual doer of any action or deed - and this Understanding can only happen." In other words: no personal reaction to any natural reaction!
  4. The "Thinking Mind" judges, compares, analyzes, fantasizes about past/future; with out the thinking mind at work, the "working or practical mind" spontaneously and naturally offers quick solutions to "problems."
  5. "The only way to transcend the fear of death is to be able to accept both the inevitability and the unknowability of the phenomenon of death. If the acceptance is the result of a clear understanding of the mechanics of phenomenal appearance and ... Then the surrendering of the illusory ego to Absolute Reality... brings home to us the utter unreality of the process of life and death." Can this realization get translated into sweet surrender to WHAT-IS? "Living then would become free, natural, and therefore, noumenal when the fictitious phenomenal 'me' stops intruding." Man is not prepared to surrender the relative "me" in order to become the Absolute Subject! He cannot envisage the possibility that THAT which has been eternally present does not need a form, because he cannot give up the idea of a separate entity as a "me" opposed to the "other". His instinct of eternal presence is indeed true, but his intellect cannot give up its conditioned reflex to personalize that eternal principle. There is truly no "me" as an individual entity to go anywhere! Thus, where does one go after death? Nowhere! Death is purely conceptual, entirely imaginary and illusory.

NOTE: How summarize Nadeen's From Onions to Pearls and From Seekers to Finders? (See very important footnotes.)

Nadeen

  1. Confinement, the last step
    As before, another Dark Night
        of the Soul arrives
    Awakening to enlightenment
    The Shift1 happened
    A sudden realization.

  2. Deliverance2 follows
    Daily contractions3 provide the fuel
    Dissolving resistances long held
    Freedom from built-in DNA longing
    Infinite Vastness, his true identity.
The Presence within is all that matters.

  3. Buddha: desire/craving, the root of all suffering
Nadeen: the root of suffering resistance is.
(as the ratio of resistance to desire is 80 to 20)
Peak or valley--bliss or deep peace?
The Shift opts for Presence in peaceful valleys.
It is, as It is. The Rapture4.

  4. New force field5 awakening millions
    Their core essence remembering
Ordinary, not special: non-doing and accepting
whatever is, just as it is, and
        only because it is6.
    Welcoming and witnessing contractions
for embedded within them is perfect happiness7.

  5. Seeing the perfection of every thing exactly as it is
    No need to fix anything.
    Source periodically asks for "help,"
and compassion arises: "If there is something
within my resources to give, I cannot refuse a request."

  6. No shoulds, no expectations.
No longer reacting. Freedom and real compassion!

Footnotes:

  1. The Shift: "the sudden understanding of the reality that Consciousness is all there is and that we are not the doer." Basic elements of the Shift:

    Unlimited
Source of all that is, at rest
        Consciousness (Impersonal, Infinite Intelligence,
"formless Energy") in an unmanifested state,
Cannot know Itself as Subject except through an object,
the object being all of manifested creation,
appearances, as in a dream: Consciousness
        in manifestation.
Dreaming that It is limited though this universe of
        appearance; and, through individual mind/body
organisms that illusion is personified in us.
Thus, the drama of Source amusing Itself by
        dreaming dreams of limitation.
All we have to do is Wake Up from the dream.
(The Shift is the halfway point.)
  2. Deliverance: "is the flow of ramifications from the above understanding that is then lived every moment of every day." (Usually a few years.)
  3. Contractions: "a strongly felt "no" to what is--an emotional resistance." (Contractions are blessings: and invitation to examine life from the perspective of Source.)
  4. Rapture: "permanently seeing daily life as Source experiences it."
  5. One possible explanation: The Awakening of the West: The Encounter of Buddhism and Western Culture, by Stephen Batchelor. Another take on the "new force field" is that of the Indian influence.
in the spiritual tradition of Advaita Vedanta: "Nondualism. The doctrine that contends that only Source--the Absolute--the Ultimate Principle has existence and that all phenomenal existence is illusion." In fact, the new force field probably has many other inputs as well. For example, see The Awakening West, by Lynn Marie Lumiere.
  6. After awareness of each contraction, a suggested mantra: "it is, as it is!". Keep daily contraction notepad to discover resistance patterns.
  7. "The Kingdom of God is within." See Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas, by Elaine Pagels. Thomas's Jesus directs each disciple to the discover the light within ("within a person of light there is light.") The Divine dwells as "light" within all beings, i.e., there is an innate capacity to know God. We have direct access to God through the Divine Image with in us.

NOTE: After reading Awakening of the West: The Encounter of Buddhism and Western Culture, by Stephen Batchelor, I felt drawn to summarize and offer reflections thereon. For Jesuitical followers, please read chapters 11-13.

Buddhism

  1. A Buddhocracy Tibet was
Exile forced, now worldwide teaching expanding.
Traditions old: Karma Kagyu, Soto Zen, and Nichiren
Yielded to "newer" Sakya and Geluk Schools,
Rinzai Zen and Pure Land traditions.
    And now? Which shall prevail?
    Will chanting "Nam-Myoko-Renge-Kyo" lead
to Buddhahood attainment and world-wide conversion?
The Dharma flourishes! But which? What interpretation?
What is it really? The answer:
nothing you can put your finger on.

  2. Constant mindfulness of one's resolve,
Awareness of the means for that resolve.
    Careful psychological self-discipline,
        not mere adherence to rules.
Follow your own insights and intuition
for established institutions are beyond salvation.
    True/Original/Unconditioned mind is the key.

  3. Major Teaching: "Transparency" - the absence of
        any thingness in things
    This infinite unfindability points to
the unity of wisdom and compassion,
To identification with others, to non-separateness
and interconnectedness of all life leads.
Compassion arises: the spontaneous reflex of the
        understanding of transparency and interdependence
The selfless aspiration to attain enlightenment
for the sake of all living beings
    Buddhahood is all!

  4. True practice: mindfully seeing everything
        arising in one's own heart.
    Ethical integrity is inner freedom!
Zazen, the simple act of sitting in balanced posture,
going beyond the dualism of either thinking or not-thinking
to a higher unity that transcends both.
No gap between practice and enlightenment
        or zazen and daily life
"Kensho" arrives - the nature of reality suddenly experienced.
Cosmic Buddhahood, the underlying reality, the ultimate destiny
        of all living beings.
Yet, which practice? Abrupt Kensho or too-passive zazen?
    Perhaps puzzling over a Koan.

  5. Recall Dogen's words: "studying the Buddha way
is studying oneself. Studying oneself is forgetting
oneself. Forgetting oneself is being enlightened
        by all things."

  6. As an Ex-Jesuit, ashamed am I
of the Jesuitical attitude of self-righteous rejection
of Buddhism in the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Second Vatican Council's "Dialogue" of Nostra Aetate
appears as a euphemism for "evangelization" of Ad Gentes.
Will we ever develop a genuine, tolerant, pluralistic attitude
        and acknowledge the independent validity
        of other spiritual paths?
"Truth" seems to be the major stumbling block!
Or, is it power/control in the guise of "Truth"?

NOTE: After 13 years as a Jesuit, I left the Society of Jesus, an Order of the Roman Catholic Church, for many reasons, theological/scriptural being just one. Many of my "unconscious/conscious" problems were recently illuminated in reading Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas, by Elaine Pagels1. Some reflections follow: "Faith seeks understanding."

Believers or Seekers?

  1. Wondered you, the scriptural foundation of Christianity?
        "Traditional teachings without questioning accept?"
Desire you knowledge of how the Canon2 was formed
        and continued as such
        until recent discoveries/research?
As an ex-Jesuit, these desires emerged.

  2. Suppose, thought I, the alternative route
        the Catholic Church took.
Not one of sin, hierarchy, obedience, authority,
        infallibility, faith-emphasis, property/money seeking.
Instead, one of service, dreams, revelations, visions,
        stories, sayings, ecstatic speech.
In short, what determined which of the two?

  3. Many diverse Christian communities there were,
        (100-200 AD) contentious and divided.
    Peter's Christians, John's Christians, Thomas's Christians
and so on - all inspired by the holy spirit!
And all attacked by anti-Christian peoples.
Bishop Iranaeus of Turkey3 enters the scene,
        following his teacher Bishop Polycarp:
        "How unify these diverse world-wide
        communities into one,"
        survival was the goal.
But, too many "secret writings" - too many texts4
Does the spirit say different things to different people?
Who knows who has the spirit and who does not?

  4. More gospels discovered in Upper Egypt:
        Nag Hammadi finds.
        Dead Sea Scrolls too!
What say Marcus, Valentinus, Maximilla, Montanus
        and Priscilla?
    How discriminate? The difference between
        the word of God
and mere human words how tell?
The Gospel of John versus the Gospel of Thomas:
"Belief in Jesus alone offers salvation" versus
"The divine dwells as 'light' within all beings."

  5. Iranaeus, principal architect
        of the four-gospel canon;
        the "orthodox" (straight-thinking) Christianity.
Yet we do not know who actually wrote the gospels.
Worse yet, what if some who read the "right gospels"
read them in the wrong way,
        or, in many wrong ways?
Iranaeus's reading of any gospel was
the correct reading - thus the "canon of truth."
So ... try the Gospel of Truth by Valentinus
        and see what you think
        about The Gnosis kardis,
        the knowledge of the heart.

  6. As for the "accepted" gospels:
Mathew depicts Jesus as God's appointed King,
            traces his family back to King David;
        Luke emphasizes Jesus's role as priest;
Mark sees Jesus primarily as God's prophet.
But John - and John alone
             - identifies Jesus as God!
Yet, other gospels interesting perspectives raise.

  7. Some see a distinction:
God (as Source) beyond God (as Creator)5 -
        Spiritual intuition versus traditional sources
            of revelation
God, word and Jesus Christ are waves of divine energy
            flowing down from above.
        Christians have direct access to know God;
            They can verify the truth from their own experience;
Sons of God too, they consider themselves!

  8. Egyptian Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria and
        successor Athanasius,
with other Christian communities battle do.
Emperor Constantine (ca. 312 AD) amnesty to Christians6
        grants, an imperial patron became.
The Council of Nicaea (325 AD),
        with Constantine's blessing, dictates:
Reject aprocryphal books and read with "dianoia";7
            shun "epinoia."8
        Obey priests in the Christian Churches that are "genuine";
Shun the other Christian heretics, schismatics,
            and hypocrites.
Thus, absolutely certain unchanging truth prevails?

  9. Yet recent discoveries at Nag Hammadi
        and Dead Sea Scrolls,
        the old debates raise up.
For now virtually for the first time -
the "heretics" for themselves can speak!
    Christianity, a system of doctrines,
Or, a spiritual inquiry into the Divine?
    Epinoia or dianoia?
    Seekers or Believers?

  10. What think you?

  7. Dianoia: the capacity to discern the meaning or intention implicit in each text.

  8. Epinoia: spiritual intuition: creative or inventive consciousness.
Basic attitude: the conviction on that direct, personal and absolute knowledge of authentic truths of existence is accessible to human beings, and more over, attainment of such knowledge must always constitute the supreme achievement of human life.

  9. For recent controversy, see The New York Times,
"Months Before Debut, Movie on Death Of Jesus Causes Stir," Aug 2, 2003, page A1; and "That Old-World Religion," (a review of Catholicism and American Freedom: A History, by John T. McGreevy) in The New York Times Book Review, Aug 3, 2003, page13. Regarding the movie, "Mr. Gibson has said his movie will be true to the Gospel account of the last hours of Jesus' Life. But Mathew, Mark, Luke and John differ greatly, presenting Rashomon-like accounts of the roles of the Romans and Jews in the Crucifixion." Summary of the Book Review: One of the oldest tensions in American Life - democratization of religion, from institutions to individual "religious" path, i.e., individual-consciousness thinking, versus centralized, authoritarian, papal-infallibility defense through "instructed conscience," based on the Thomastic moral philosophy of natural law.
Of interest too, "Does 'The Da Vinci Code' Crack Leonardo?", in The New York Times, Aug. 3, 2003, page AR26. A best-seller relying on an eccentric (for some) reading of the Last Supper.

THE NEW YORK TIMES, OP-ED COLUMNIST

Peter, Paul, Mary . . . and God

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF
Published: February 28, 2004

For a provocative look at the emergence of Christianity two millenniums ago, skip Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" and examine instead some of the fascinating recent scholarship on the early church.

Interest in the early church has blossomed because of "Passion" and the "Da Vinci Code" thriller. But "Passion" and especially "The Da Vinci Code" take great liberties with history, while serious research has gotten much less attention.

Consider the newly published "Gospel of Mary of Magdala." It offers a new translation by Karen King, a Harvard Divinity School professor, of the obscure Gospel of Mary, which was lost for 1,500 years before two fragmentary versions were found.

The Gospel of Mary offers a proto-feminist recounting of a scene in which the resurrected Jesus tells the disciples to preach, and then leaves them. The disciples are emotional and tearful — until Mary Magdalene takes charge and bucks them up.

"Do not weep and be distressed," she tells them, and, sure enough, they pull themselves together. Then Mary begins to relate Jesus' private teachings to her, saying, "I will teach you about what is hidden from you."

But the disciples rebel at being instructed by a woman. Andrew and Peter virtually accuse Mary of making it all up, and she starts crying. Levi intercedes, scolding: "Peter, you have always been a wrathful person. . . . Assuredly, the Savior's knowledge of her is completely reliable. That is why he loved her more than us."

Bibles, like history, are written by the winners. There were innumerable early gospels and teachings (some 85 percent of Christian literature from the first two centuries has been lost). Some won approval and entered the New Testament, and the rest were condemned as heresies or died out on their own. The Gnostic Gospels and other early writings suggest that initially the role of women was hotly debated, but ultimately the idea prevailed that men should dominate.

"God's pattern is for men to be the leaders, both in the church and in the family," Pat Robertson writes in his best-selling book "Bring It On." He cites I Timothy: "Women should listen and learn quietly and submissively. I do not let women teach men or have authority over them."

Likewise, Paul wrote to the Corinthians: "Women should be silent during the church meetings. It is not proper for them to speak."

That view is hard to square, though, with other accounts that portray Mary Magdalene as a favorite of Jesus'. The "Pistis Sophia" scripture quotes Jesus as telling Mary Magdalene: "You are she whose heart is more directed to the Kingdom of Heaven than all your brothers."

And the Gospel of Philip says of Mary Magdalene: "She is the one the Savior loved more than all the disciples, and he used to kiss her on her mouth often. . . . The rest of the disciples . . . said to him, `Why do you love her more than us?' "

These gospels aren't necessarily suggesting a romance between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and in any case their value is much debated — traditionalists argue that they are prized to make ideological points rather than to clarify history. The Gospel of Mary was written in her name but not by her, and apparently was written in the early second century, long after the events it describes.

Still, the dispute over the role of women can be seen raging in many early Christian writings. The Gospel of Thomas even quotes Simon Peter as saying, "Let Mary leave us, for women are not worthy of life."

Susan Haskins, in her history of the idea of Mary Magdalene, says that egalitarian principles in the New Testament initially prevailed in the first-century Christian community. But then, she writes, Christianity gradually returned to the traditional patriarchal system of Judaism.

That suppression of female leadership may be behind the labeling of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute, starting with a sermon by Pope Gregory the Great in 591. And recent scholarship has established that Junius, whom Paul calls "distinguished among the apostles," was actually Junia, a woman whose name was made masculine by later translators.

How should we regard these alternative versions of Biblical events? They are a reminder that there were competing strains in the early Christian church, and that different outcomes were possible. My guess is that the ordination of women would not have been controversial if Mary Magdalene, rather than St. Peter, had emerged as the first pope.

NOTE: The following pays tribute to a scholarly research project: The Jesus Mysteries: Was the "Original Jesus" a Pagan God; and, Jesus and the Lost Goddess: The Secret Teachings of the Original Christians, both by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy.

The Gnostic Jesus

  1. In the beginning, the Egyptian Osiris-Dionysus
        Mysteries prevailed.
These, then, to Italy and Greece Pythagoras brought
along with Plato, Socrates, the so-called "Pagans."
Rational philosophers, no; but, spiritual mystics indeed.
Jewish initiates the myths of Osiris-Dionysys1 adapted
the story of a Jewish dying/resurrecting godman:
        Jesus the Messiah creating.
Within the first centuries the story (allegory) historical fact became
The origin of Christianity of great importance arises.

  2. The existence of Jesus the man evidence exists?2
From contemporary Pagan history writers none.
Nor from the Philo and Josephus, Jewish historians.
The four Gospels themselves? Doesn't appear so.
The Acts of the Apostles, a "cut and paste" creation, not factual.
    Paul's letters?3 The Gospels predate!

  3. Paul's Christ, like the Pagan's Osiris-Dionysus,
a timeless mythical figure, developed by
the primitive Jesus story of Mark.
At the same time, the Gnostic gospels the secret teachings
        of the risen Christ proclaim
Thus, a two-fold origin: for the spiritual beginners,
the Outer Mysteries; the Inner Mysteries for the initated4

  4. Many Christian communities vying for leadership.
Two main struggles: How should Christianity develop?
Incorporate the Jews or a more cosmopolitan view?
    The Literalists or the Gnostics?5
    Between adversaries many writings; most
        defensively self-serving
Who's wrong, who's right, who has "the truth"?
    Who is authentic?
Which?: Christianity developed from the teachings of
a Jewish Messiah and Gnosticism a later deviation; or,
was orthodox Christianity a later deviation from Gnosticism?
The conflict escalated: each was a heretic to the other!

  5. And the winner was the Literalists (orthodox Christianity)
Emperor Constantine in the Council of Nicea, with

historical existence of Jesus as the distinguishing factor.

Temples! Wipe them out! Burn their books!

  6. But who were the Pagans?
What teachings promulgate? What rituals advise?
The great Pagan Philosophers were enlightened masters
of the Mysteries: awaken to the sublime experience of
        their Oneness.
The Myth of the dying/resurrecting godman is central.
His death/rebirth symbolically represents our death
and spiritual rebirth: an altered state of awareness
The primal myth of the Mystery godman:
the Egyptian Myth of Osiris (2,500 BC).6
Pythagoras, 22 years initiate in Egyptian temples,
        to Greece with Wisdom returning
His disciples Dionysus the new Mystery godman made.
Know Thyself! Thou wilt be Him in thyself!
Discover that there is only God.

  7. And of the Gnostics, similar to the Pagan Mysteries?

"- Literalists accused the Gnostics of preaching Pagan doctrines.
    - Gnostics taught Pagan philosophy, venerated pictures of the pagan philosophers alongside pictures of Jesus, invited Pagans to Gnostic gatherings and were even initiated into the Pagan Mysteries.
    - Gnostic texts contain Pagan mythical motifs, which they claimed taught a universal philosophy.
    - Gnostics equated Jesus with "many shaped Attis" and other pseudonyms for Osiris-Dionysus.
    - As in the Pagan Mysteries, the Gnostic Christians honored the Divine Feminine in the form of the goddess Sophia.7
    - Like the sages of the Pagan Mysteries, the Gnostics were critical of the orthodox Christians' anthropomorphic picture of God. They called the Jewish god Jehovah a false god and taught that Jesus was the Son of the true ineffable God. This indescribable ultimate Oneness was identical with the supreme God of Plato and the Pagan Mysteries.
    - The Gnostic Jesus is like a Pagan hierophant who initiates his disciples into the Mysteries through dance and song.
    - Gnostics taught that Christianity, like the Pagan Mysteries, had Outer Mysteries for beginners in the faith and Inner Mysteries for the initiated.
    - Just as in the Pagan Mysteries, Christian initiates of the Inner Mysteries were sworn to secrecy.
    - Clement tells us that Mark preached three different gospels for three different levels of initiation. His gospel in the New Testament was designed "for beginners." The Secret Gospel was for those being "perfected." A further oral gospel revealed Gnosis.
    - As in the Pagan Mysteries, the goal of Gnosticism was the experience of Gnosis, or "Knowledge," which was contrasted with mere faith or belief.
    - Like the Pagan sages, the Gnostics taught "Know Thy Self" as the means of coming to know God.
    - As in the Pagan Mysteries, the Gnostics taught the doctrine of the Daemon (Heavenly Twin or Higher Self) and the eidolon (lower self).
    - As in the Pagan Mysteries, the Gnostics taught that the Daemon at first - appears to be a Guardian Angel, then is experienced as the initiate's own Higher Self and finally is realized to be the Mind of God in all things.
    - As in the Pagan Mysteries, the Gnostics taught the doctrine of reincarnation.
    - As in the Pagan Mysteries, in Gnosticism women played a prominent role.
    - Both Pagan and Gnostic sages were accused of condoning immorality when actually they were both preaching the same mystical doctrine of ` natural morality."8

  8. Was Jesus the mythical "Son of God" camouflaged
as the historical "Son of David"?
Could the following sentence be true?
"The truth of Christianity's origins was rigorously
suppressed and a new acceptable history was concocted -
a fabrication which is still taken to be accurate
by the vast majority of people of this day."
Pagan mysteries and scientific inquiries were replaced
        by dogmatic authoritarianism
(and a 1,000 years of the Dark Ages)

  9. So...after reading in depth with open mind:
    Was Jesus a historical person?
Or, a myth with encoded spiritual teachings?
    Or, both?
    What say you?

  10. To appreciate the role of the Lost Goddess9
a similar story emerges - from Isis to Sophia
    More to digest!

  3. See Ch. 8, "Was Paul a Gnostic," in The Jesus Mysteries.
  4. Outer Mysteries: outward religious practices; Inner Mysteries: secret symbolic mystical teachings.
  5. "Gnostics interpret the stories and teachings of their spiritual tradition as signposts pointing beyond words altogether to the mystical experience o the ineffable Mystery. Literalists, on the other hand, believe their scriptures are actually the words of God. They take their teachings, stories and initiation myths to be factual history. They focus on the words as a literal expression of the Truth. Hence we have chosen to call them 'Literalists'.

Gnostics are concerned with the inner essence of their tradition. Literalists associate their faith with its outward manifestations: sacred symbols, scriptures, rituals, ecclesiastical leaders, and so on. Gnostics see themselves as being on a spiritual journey of personal transformation. Literalists see themselves as fulfilling a divinely ordained obligation to practice particular religious customs as a part of their national or cultural identity.

Literalists believe that their particular spiritual tradition is different from all others and has a unique claim on the Truth. They obsessively formulate dogmas which define membership of their particular cult.' They are prepared to enforce their opinions and silence those who dissent, justifying their actions by claiming that they are fulfilling God's will. Gnostics, on the other hand, are free spirits who question the presuppositions of their own culture. They follow their hearts, not the herd. They are consumed by their private quest for enlightenment, not by the goal of recruiting more adherents to a religion," Jesus and the Lost Goddess, pgs. 9-10.

  3. See Out of Egypt: The Roots of Christianity Revealed, by Ahmed Osman, page xi-xii, Bishop Theophilus led mob that destroyed the Great Alexandrian Library. From the inside of the cover:

This book demonstrates that the prophetic books of the Bible's Old Testament and their accounts of the exploits and achievements of Abraham, Isaac and his son Joseph (who became chief minister to Pharaoh) are essentially Egyptian in origin. Furthermore, Ahmed Osman shows, by comparing the hazy chronology of the Old Testament and its factual content with the ancient Egyptian written records, that the major Old Testament figures - Solomon, David, Moses and Joshua - are based on Egyptian historical originals.

Not only were these major personalities and the stories - military, territorial and prophetic - associated with them nurtured on the banks of the Nile but the major tenets of Christian belief - the one God, the Trinity, the hierarchy of heaven, life after death and the Virgin birth - are all Egyptian in origin.

Ahmed Osman provides in this book a convincing argument that Jesus himself came out of Egypt. The Essenes and the Gnostics were devoutly guarding the secret Egyptian teaching well before the first century AD. John the Baptist was himself an Essene, and St. Paul, as he indicates in his letter to the Galatians, had himself been initiated into the Egyptian mysteries by the Gnostics at - Sinai.

By the second century AD the Egyptian cults, the Gnostics and for example the cults of Isis and Serapis, happily coexisted in Alexandria, Carthage and Rome itself. But, in the fourth century AD, the bishops of Rome embarked upon a programme of suppression and persecution. The Egyptian monuments of Alexandria were effaced and thrown down, and the great library was burnt on the orders of the Christian archbishop Theophilus. The Gnostics were branded as heretics, and the canon of scripture coupled with the creed ensured that Christians would be required to believe that the origins of Christianity were to be found in Judea.

Ahmed Osman shows how Egyptian, Biblical and Rabbinical sources, coupled with recent archaeological discoveries prove that the roots of Christian belief spring not from Judea but from Egypt.

NOTE: In honor of The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown

Codes Da Vinci: Novel or Reality?

  1. Da Vinci, of Priory of Scion, Grandmaster.
    Of codes, unequaled in depth.
    "Blinding ignorance does mislead us.
O! Wretched mortals, open your eyes."
The New Testament, a product of man, not of God.
By the pagan Roman emperor Constantine the Great
        was collated.
    Transmogrification: directly from earlier pagan
mystery religions, the Catholic ritual was taken.
    Before 325 AD, a great and powerful man, Jesus;
        but a man, nonetheless.
Then, Jesus' divinity by a vote1 was decided.
Those who chose the original (pre-325 AD) history
        of Christ, heretics were called.
But the Dead Sea Scrolls/The Coptic Scrolls
        at Nag Hammadi confirmation gave:
"The Bible completed/edited by men of
political agendas - the divinity of Jesus
        promote/his influence use
to solidify their own power base."

  2. What of the Holy Grail?
The key: Da Vinci's Last Supper: The Holy Grail,
not a chalice, but a PERSON!
    A woman! Mary Magdalene!
A marriage to Jesus, offspring ensued,
        a bloodline continued
Mary of the House of Benjamin; Jesus, the House of David -
        both of royal blood!
Thus, the legend of the Holy Grail, a legend of royal blood2.

  3. "Not so," the Catholic Church!
A child of Jesus: the central notion of
Christ's divinity, thus, the Christian Church
        underminded would be.
So ... Magdalene as a whore by the Church recast
        to protect itself/ its power!
A family tree of Jesus exists3
    Sangreal Documents - Purist Documents,
"Q" documents, the Magdalene Diaries -
        alternative information reveal.
The Brotherhood, the Priory, to safeguard Christ's lineage.
    Fifth century Christ's lineage intermarried
with French royal blood: Merovingian bloodline established.

  4. The Quest of the Holy Grail: to kneel before the
bones of Mary Magdalene, the outcast one,
        the lost sacred feminine.
Knights Templar, Priory's military arm, to safeguard
the Sangreal Documents, proof of the
        Merovingian's ties to Jesus Christ.
Only Plantard and Saint-Clair family names remain,
        yet in hiding must be.
"If persuasive scientific evidence comes out -
the church's version of the Christ story is inaccurate:
the greatest story ever told; in fact, the greatest story ever sold!
The End of Days, the documents to be revealed?

  5. Hieros Gamos, through spiritual/mystical ritual of
intercourse, male/female, God to experience -
a sacrosanct ceremony, creative magic of the
        sexual union honoring.
But, the use of sex to commune directly with God
a threat to the Chruch's power base poised -
        therefore, sex demonized/sinful became.
    Role of the later troubadours:
ministers of the Church of Mary Magdalene,
        to disseminate music used:
the story of the Sacred Feminine
The tarot - a metaphysical game Grand Teachings
        to disguise.

  6. Opus Dei and Vatican, completely innocent?
Rosslyn Chapel, the Cathedral of Codes -
        vault beneath the Chapel?
Sophie's parents, both from Merovingian families -
direct ancestors of Mary Magdalene/Jesus Christ -
        the PRESENT royal bloodline?
The End of Days, a legend of paranoid minds?
Priory: Grail should never be revealed!4

    The Rosslyn Chapel

  7. Epilogue: The Louvre Pyramid -
Le Pyramide Inversée - a breathtaking
        V-shaped contour of glass - the Chalice;
The Chalice above, the Blade below.
The Quest for the Holy Grail: to kneel before the
        bones of Mary Magdalene -
Robert Langdon to his knees falls!

  8. Such a ending Brown hypothesizes
    Insufficient for many others,
And what of the Royal Bloodline before?5
    Whence comes this ancient concept?
    Where did it all begin?

  9. And where will it end?

"But if the Sangreal Documents remain hidden, the story of Mary Magdalene will be lost forever" - not so, her story is being told in art, music, and books," says Sophie's aunt.
  5. But perhaps even more important, have you ever wondered whence came the concept of royal bloodline?
Way before Mary Magdalene (the royal House of Benjamin) and Jesus Christ (the royal House of David), there were royal bloodlines with the Egyptian pharaohs; and before that with the Sumerians (see Antediluvian Kings of Sumer when kingship was lowered from "heaven" to Eridu); and, even before that, possibly the royal bloodline concept (the legitimate heir, the rules of succession), ORIGINATED from the ANUNNAKI (the biblical Nefilim) of The 12th Planet; and, Wars and Gods and Men, both by Zecharia Sitchin. For example from the Sumerian clay tablets, we learn that King AN or Anu, of Nibiru, with his official consort (half-sister) Antu, gave birth to Enlil who became the (legal) legitimate heir: thus, a bloodline based on a code of genetic purity, not a code of sexual behavior based on morality, was established on Earth. And Laurence Gardner shows how this royal bloodline (rulership) passed from Anu and Enlil through the Egyptians, the Hebrews, Jesus Christ, the Merovingian Kings to PRESENT DAY legitimate heirs. See the Ancestry of Adam, pages 239-259 in Genesis of the Grail Kings: The Explosive Story of Genetic Cloning and the Ancient Bloodline of Jesus, by Laurence Gardner. Check all of this out for yourself! Also see Rule by Secrecy, by Jim Marrs, for an exposition of the power dimension mentioned above: from the IMF/Federal Reserve through Secret Societies to the SUMERIANS, once again!

NOTE: For an alternative prehistory of the Sumerians and those who were here before them, see the following information.

The Earth Chronicles: Time Chart
- taken from Wars of God and Men, by Zecharia Sitchin

Years Ago             I. Events Before the Deluge

450,000 On Nibiru, a distant member of our solar system, life faces slow extinction as the planet's atmosphere erodes. Deposed by Anu, the ruler Alalu escapes in a spaceship and finds refuge on Earth. He discovers that Earth has gold that can be used to protect Nibiru's atmosphere.

445,000 Led by Enki, a son of Anu, the Anunnaki land on Earth, establish Eridu Earth Station 1 for extracting gold from the waters of the Persian Gulf.

430,000 Earth's climate mellows. More Anunnaki arrive on Earth, among them Enki's half sister Ninharsag, Chief Medical Officer.

416,000 As gold production falters, Anu arrives on Earth with Enlil, the heir apparent. It is decided to obtain the vital gold by mining it in southern Africa. Drawing lots, Enlil wins command of Earth Mission; Enki is relegated to Africa. On departing Earth, Anu is challenged by Alalu's grandson.

400,000 Seven functional settlements in southern Mesopotamia include a Spaceport (Sippar). Mission ControlCenter (Nippur), a metallurgical center (Badtibira), a medical center (Shuruppak). The ores arrive by ships from Africa; the refined metal is sent aloft to orbiters manned by Igigi, then transferred to spaceships arriving periodically from Nibiru.

380,000 Gaining the support of the Igigi, Alalu's grandson at tempts to seize mastery over Earth. The Enlilites win the War of the Olden Gods.

300,000 The Anunnaki toiling in the gold mines mutiny. Enki and Ninharsag create Primitive Workers through genetic manipulation of Apewoman; they take over the manual chores of the Anunnaki. Enlil raids the mines, brings the Primitive Workers to the Edin in Mesopotamia. Given the ability to procreate, Homo sapiens begins to multiply.

The Genetic Engineering or Creation of Man according to the Sumerian Clay Tablets.

200,000 Life on Earth regresses during a new glacial period.

100,000 Climate warrns again. The Anunnaki (the biblical Nefilim), to Enlil's growing annoyance, marry the daughters of Man.

75,000 The "accursation of Earth" a new Ice Age begins. Regressive types of Man roam the Earth. Cro Magnon man survives.

49,000 Enki and Ninharsag elevate humans of Anunnaki parentage to rule in Shuruppak. Enlil, enraged, plots Mankind's demise.

13,000 Realizing that the passage of Nibiru in Earth's proximity will trigger an immense tidal wave, Enlil makes the Anunnaki swear to keep the impending calamity a secret from Mankind.

B.C.II. Events After the Deluge

11,000 Enki breaks the oath, instructs Ziusudra/Noah to build a submersible ship. The Deluge sweeps over the Earth; the Anunnaki witness the total destruction from their orbiting spacecraft.

Enlil agrees to grant the remnants of Mankind implements and seeds; agriculture begins in the highlands. Enki domesticates animals.

10,500 The descendants of Noah are allotted three regions. Ninurta, Enlil's foremost son, dams the mountains and drains the rivers to make Mesopotamia habitable; Enki reclaims the Nile valley. The Sinai peninsula is retained by the Anunnaki for a post-Diluvial spaceport; a control center is establshied on Mount Moriah (the future Jerusalem).

9780 Ra/Marduk, Enki's firstborn son, divides dominion over Egypt between Osiris and Seth.

9330 Seth seizes and dismembers Osiris, assumes sole rule over the Nile Valley.

8970 Horus avenges his father Osiris by launching the First Pyramid War. Seth escapes to Asia, seizes the Sinai peninsula and Canaan.

8670 Opposed to the resulting control of all the space facilities by Enki's descendants, the Enlilites launch the Second Pyramid War. The victorious Ninurta empties the Great Pyramid of its equipment.

Ninharsag, half sister of Enki and Enlil, convenes a peace conference. The division of Earth is reaffirmed. Rule over Egypt transferred from the Ra/Marduk dynasty to that of Thoth. Heliopolis built as a substitute Beacon City.

8500 The Anunnaki establish outposts at the gateway to the space facilities; Jericho is one of them.

7400 As the era of peace continues, the Anunnaki grant Mankind new advances; the Neolithic period begins. Demigods rule over Egypt.

3800 Urban civilization begins in Sumer as the Anunnaki reestablish there the Olden Cities, beginning with Eridu and Nippur.

Anu comes to Earth for a pageantful visit. A new city, Uruk (Erech), is built in his honor; he makes its temple the abode of his beloved granddaughter Inanna/Ishtar.

B.C.III. Kingship on Earth

3760 Mankind granted kingship. Kish is first capital under the aegis of Ninurta. The calendar begun at Nippur. Civilization blossoms out in Sumer (the First Region).

3450 Primacy in Sumer transferred to Nannar/Sin. Marduk proclaims Babylon "Gateway of the Gods." The "Tower of Babel" incident. The Anunnaki confuse Mankind's languages.

His coup frustrated, Marduk/Ra returns to Egypt, deposes Thoth, seizes his younger brother Dumuzi, who had betrothed Inanna. Dumuzi accidentally killed; Marduk imprisoned alive in the Great Pyramid. Freed through an emergency shaft, he goes into exile.

3100 350 years of chaos end with installation of first Egyptian Pharaoh in Memphis. Civilization comes to the Second Region.

2900 Kingship in Sumer transferred to Erech. Inanna given dominion over the Third Region; the Indus Valley civilization begins.

2650 Sumer's royal capital shifts about. Kingship deteriorates. Enlil loses patience with the unruly human multitudes.

2371 Inanna falls in love with Sharru Kin (Sargon). He establishes new capital city, Agade (Akkad). Akkadian empire launched.

2316 Aiming to rule the Four Regions, Sargon removes sacred soil from Babylon. The Marduk Inanna conflict flares up again. It ends when Nergal, Marduk's brother, journeys from south Africa to Babylon and persuades Marduk to leave Mesopotamia.

2291 Naram Sin ascends the throne of Akkad. Directed by the warlike Inanna, he penetrates the Sinai peninsula, invades Egypt.

2255 Inanna usurps the power in Mesopotamia; Naram Sin defiles Nippur. The Great Anunnaki obliterate Agade. Inanna escapes. Sumer and Akkad occupied by foreign troops loyal to Enlil and Ninuna.

2220 Sumerian civilization rises to new heights under enlightened rulers of Lagash. Thoth helps its king Gudea build a ziggurat temple for Ninurta.

2193 Terah, Abraham's father, born in Nippur into a priestly royal family.

2180 Egypt divided; followers of Ra/Marduk retain the south; Pharaohs opposed to him gain the throne of lower Egypt.

2130 As Enlil and Ninurta are increasingly away, central authority also deteriorates in Mesopotamia. Inanna's attempt to regain the kingship for Erech does not last.

B. C.IV. The Fateful Century

2123 Abraham born in Nippur.

2113 Enlil entrusts the Lands of Shem to Nannar; Ur declared capital of new empire. Ur Nammu ascends throne, is named Protector of Nippur. A Nippurian priest Terah, Abraham's father comes to Ur to liaison with its royal court.

2096 Ur Nammu dies in battle. The people consider his untimely death a betrayal by Anu and Enlil. Terah departs with his family for Harran.

2095 Shulgi ascends the throne of Ur, strengthens imperial ties. As empire thrives, Shulgi falls under charms of Inanna, becomes her lover. Grants Larsa to Elamites in exchange for serving as his Foreign Legion.

2080 Theban princes loyal to Ra/Marduk press northward under Mentuhotep 1. Nabu, Marduk's son, gains adherents for his father in Western Asia.

2055 On Narmar's orders, Shulgi sends Elamite troops to suppress unrest in Canaanite cities. Elamites reach the gateway to the Sinai peninsula and its Spaceport.

2048 Shulgi dies. Marduk moves to the Land of the Hittites. Abraham ordered to southern Canaan with an elite corps of cavalrymen.

2047 Amar Sin (the biblical Amraphel) becomes king of Ur. Abraham goes to Egypt, stays five years, then returns with more troops.

2041 Guided by Inanna, Amar Sin forrns a coalition of Kings of the East, launches military expedition to Canaan and the Sinai. Its leader is the Elamite Khedor Women. Abraham blocks the advance at the gateway to the Spaceport.

2038 Shu Sin replaces Amar Sin on throne of Ur as the empire disintegrates.

2029 Ibbi Sin replaces Shu Sin. The western provinces tilt increasingly to Marduk.

2024 Leading his followers, Marduk marches on Sumer, enthrones himself in Babylon. Fighting spreads to central Mesopotamia. Nippur's Holy of Holies is defiled. Enlil demands punishment for Marduk and Nabu; Enki opposes, but his son Nergal sides with Enlil.

As Nabu marshals his Canaanite followers to capture the Spaceport, the Great Anunnaki approve the use of nuclear weapons. Nergal and Ninurta destroy the Spaceport and the errant Canaanite cities.

2023 The winds carry the radioactive cloud to Sumer. People die a terrible death, animals perish, the water is poisoned, the soil becomes barren. Sumer and its great civilization lie prostrate. Its legacy passes to Abraham's seed as he begets at age 100 a legitimate heir: Isaac.

NOTE: I recently received an e-mail causing me to question the Ramtha phenomenon which inspired the following thoughts.

Planetary History1

  1. Mainstream history so far travels
    Astronomy ever-expanding vistas reveals
    Archeology distant civilizations unearths
        --histories or myths? Constantly changing.
The Hebrew Bible has its own Genesis.
    The Christians Genesis also invoke.
Evolution or Creationism? Maybe Evolutionary Creationism2
    Where, pray-tell, is the truth?
    Maybe, all are partially true.

  2. Recently, The Urantia Book speaks of
        evolutionary revelation--a new interpretation
        of Earth (Urantia).
    Zecharia Sitchin's Earth Chronicles, especially
The 12th Planet; and, The Wars of Gods and Men,
of Sumerian clay tablets detailed research offers,
        the Judeo-Christian paradigm overthrowing?

  3. JZ Knight's channeled Being other dimensions adding--
Ramtha: A Master's Reflections on the History of Humanity.
Has a 35,000 year old Being actually seen it all?
Was the worship of the Goddess prior to that of the God?
Mark Amaru Pinkham in Return of the Serpent Wisdom; and,
Conversations with the Goddess, for the female beginnings writes
Can the masculine and feminine be reconciled?

  4. And, of Jesus?
    Countless paths to Consciousness
    The Jesus path being one.
Which Jesus path? Many those are!
    Dogmatic Catholic/Protestant versions/ a Muslim's Prophet.
Historical figure or myth? Which, pray-tell?
A God, an archetype, an ascended Master, a Prophet,
        a Teacher Supreme, a friend, ...?
(The Urantia Book: Incarnation of Creator Son Christ Michael:
New Planetary Prince. One of 700,000 Creator Sons of God)
Laurence Gardner's Bloodline of the Holy Grail; and,
Genesis of the Grail Kings sheds light?
Theosophy, Anthroposophy, A Course in Miracles:
    What say ye?
To me, the meaning of Jesus? To you?3

  5. Can these finite minds ever know?
Will all this knowledge ever be integrated?
Does it even matter? Yes...and, no.
For billions of people have been killed/maimed
        and continue to be
        in the name of . . .
Religions and philosophies war against each other
        and oftentimes within themselves also,
-- liberals versus conservatives, and more.
Power and control is all! What happened to Love?
Will understanding and peace ever come?

  6. Yes! The answer is in the Power of Now,
        the surrender of control.

  7. Now--no need to read anymore
but one can enjoy it at times.
For the mind cannot transcend the mind.
    What can?
Love, and "the peace that surpasses all understanding."

Footnotes:
1. While reading this "poem" my wife stated: this is really disjointed, it's not a poem! So I achieved my purpose: intellectual knowledge and truth are disjointed. How can finite theories explain the Infinite Intelligence? But what fun trying!
2. See the Institute for Evolutionary Creationism on www.NewAgeUniversity.org
3. Another interpretation, Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas, by Elaine Pagels. Enjoy!
